Dannevirke police are sending a warning to cannabis growers with plans for their indoors this winter after a routine check turned up a derelict house converted for cultivating marijuana. Sergeant Tony LeSueur said police went to a rural property between Dannevirke and Woodville on Sunday for "a routine inquiry".
"While there, police could smell cannabis being consumed at the house," Mr LeSueur said. "A search of the main house was carried out, and a small amount of cannabis and cannabis utensils were located."
A further search of the property found a nearby derelict house had been converted for growing cannabis.
"There were two rooms that had been fully converted with extensive lighting, ventilation and heating systems.
"This house contained 39 one-metre tall cannabis plants."
