Cancer 'fundrazor' grows support

Local street guardians are renouncing their razors to help raise funds for child cancer.

Hastings City Assist team members Chris Bartlett, BJ Pui, James Haronga and Mike Godinet will grow their beards for seven months in support of the Child Cancer Foundation.

The men will then shave them off as part of the foundation's annual "fundrazor", which helps children with cancer and their families.

Some are more confident than others about how low their beards will grow by the time the 29 weeks is up.

The council staff members, who dedicate their time patrolling the city centre, have the backing of Hastings District Council, the Child Cancer Foundation and the central city retailers.

In November, a local barber will shear off the men's manes in town square.

Mike Godinet said it's a very personal cause for him and his team.

"We have all known someone who has been through this journey, some more closely than others, and would like to do our bit."

They had already attracted amazing support, as of yesterday, the public had donated almost $800 towards their $5000 target to their online donation page.

Contributors littered the comment section with messages of support.

"Thanks for sharing your story, you guys amaze me with your beautiful aura and positive spirits."
