After concerns raised at last month's Tararua District Council meeting, councillor Ernie Christison called for barrier chains to be erected at Dannevirke's Kumeti Reserve to protect it from damage from four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Similar damage had been reported at Ferry Reserve at Ballance and Mr Christison said something needed to be done to stop "the idiots".
However, Kelly Hancock, community ranger for the Department of Conservation in the Manawatu, has told the Dannevirke News they haven't received reports of unsafe acts or significant damage at the Kumeti Reserve.
"There have been a few reports of nuisance acts there recently, including a permitted possum trapper reporting that some of his traps were stolen, and a vehicle being towed by another visitor who took exception to the way the vehicle was parked," she said.
"We don't believe this calls for the prohibition of vehicles.
