A 63-year-old man dislocated his shoulders after being charged by a cow near Cape Kidnappers yesterday.
The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter responded to the man, who had been charged by a cow protecting its calf on the farm.
A rescue-helicopter spokeswoman said the man managed to drive his quad bike to an area where he was able to gain cellphone reception and phone emergency services for help.
St John district operations manager Stephen Smith said an intensive-care paramedic was sent on the helicopter to the farm to treat the man.
The victim was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Hawke's Bay Hospital for additional treatment.
