Temperatures hit the coldest of winter so far this morning, eclipsing the previous low of -3C for Hastings and Napier by up to 2C.
Napier reached -4.8C and Hastings a bitter -5C in the early hours of this morning.
The people of Dannevirke, however, bore the real brunt of their close proximity to the Tararuas with a frigid -7C recorded. The freezing temperatures were the result of a southerly front that brought snow to the ranges about Hawke's Bay.
MetService said the cool, clear conditions were forecast to stay for a few more days, bringing more overnight frosts tonight and tomorrow, although lows of a relatively warm 0C were predicted.
Brrr, big freeze bites
