For Ellison it was his third Cray title. His last was in 1987 when it was a fours event. It became a triples tournament in 1998.
To'omata became a second-time winner of the title. She said a key to their success was collecting seven points off an end in each of their three games on Saturday.
They had just one loss during the weekend- against eventual consolation section winners Barry Wakely, Ken Robson and Graeme Gaut of Bowls Taradale.
Their next closest game was a 17-10 victory against another Bowls Napier trio of Clifford Marshall, Michelle Robinson and Chris Telford who went on to win the Hobson Plate.
While To'omata and Smith had played in teams together previously this was the first time they had played in a team with former Hawke's Bay rep Ellison.
"It was hard to talk Fred into it because he is always on overseas trips," Smith said.
However Ellison said there was a good chance the trio would attempt back-to-back titles next year. That may be the next time they play together again.
"I'll be playing against Fred in club championship play next weekend," Smith, who won the Railway Pairs tournament at the Port club with clubmate Ces Bell in February, said.
In line with the event's tradition Ellison, Smith and To'omata received crayfish and cash with the trophy.
Bay View bowler Judy Richards presented the Cray Trophy to the winners. Richards is the daughter of the late Jack Creagh who introduced the tournament to the province when he was a social player at the Port Ahuriri club.
"It's great to see the tournament is still going. I've played in four or five and won the Hobson Plate one year but have still to win the Cray Trophy," Richards said.
She played two in a Bay View team with skip Russell Smith and lead Di Bentley which recorded three wins from six games at the weekend.
Defending champions Bill Smoothy, Ron Palmer and Euan Hubbard of the Omarunui club finished with four wins.
