He was born and raised in Havelock North, now Spencer Falls' face is splashed across magazines and websites world-wide, with rumours growing of romantic links to Lindsay Lohan.
After moving to the United States to pursue a career in acting at the age of 19, the 22-year-old found fame after he beat 6000 other applicants for a gig as one half of Virgin Mobile's spoof couple Sparah in its mobile advertising campaign.
Falls and his faux sweetheart, Sarah Carroll, are given access to flash cars and clothing, are invited to openings and blog about their "relationship" on social networking sites.
But it is a steamy photo shoot with Lindsay Lohan by photographer Tyler Shields, followed by a picture of the couple leaving Lohan's California home and reports they dined together at Hollywood's legendary Chateau Marmont that have gossip tongue's wagging.
Hollywood blogger Perez Hilton posted about the rumoured relationship on his website on Wednesday afternoon.
"Although many may have assumed that Lindsay Lohan was in a long-term relationship with delusion, booze, and the El Lay legal system, it appears the actress has moved on to greener pastures," he wrote.
"Gurl was spotted at the Chateau Marmont last week with actor Spencer Falls, who is best known for his gig in Virgin Mobile commercials.
"Boy is not going to know what he got himself into!"
Falls' father John, who still lives in Havelock North with wife, Leslie, keeps in contact with his son but opts not to buy into the gossip surrounding his new life.
"He told me not to believe everything you read," he laughed. "His whole life is one big series of events, he and Sarah have been promoted as a couple and they get on very well, so that's great."
The Virgin ad campaign is a fantastic opportunity for Falls and gives him a step in the right direction, his father said.
"He wants to be an actor, not just a celebrity. He wants to develop a career.
"I have every confidence that he will be a credit to his country."
Since the Sparah campaign began, Falls has been spotted schmoozing with celebrities such as Mike Posner and Stephanie Pratt, posing on the cover of SPIN magazine and staying a night at the Playboy mansion.
"He told me staying in the Playboy mansion was an exciting experience, to say the least," his father said.
He was not concerned at the reported links between Spencer and the erratic Lohan.
"I think if he's having any exchanges with Lindsay Lohan he will be fulfilling the role of a positive influence.
"I think if you grow up in Los Angeles then you would be caught up in all of that, but in this case, he's just a down-to-earth sort of guy."
