"It's been established as a great event in Australia, it's not trashy, just confident girls who have some self respect," event organiser Jess Ratana says.
"There's a swimwear segment and an after 5pm one so they will strut their stuff in a bikini then glam themselves up, they really need to keep it classy."
Regional winners from Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North will join the local winner at a national final, also set to be held in sunny Hawke's Bay.
The overall champion gets to wave a flag for New Zealand on Australia's Gold Coast in May.
Flights are paid for and they will be put up in Beachcomber Resort for a week, with a chance to take out the entire competition, gaining a cover girl slot and spread in Maxim.
"How great would it be to get a Kiwi girl in a big Auzzie event? you know what NZ/Australian rivalry is like," Ms Ratana said.
"If you are confident to give it a go, why not?"
The event starts on Saturday from 9pm, with a panel of local judges on hand to select their favourite Bay beauty.
Last year's winner Laura Brunskill scooped the sash from a group of 27 finalists.
Models were tasked with creating an interesting photo in less than one minute with 12 separate photographers. Other judging events included the catwalk, personality tests and a dance competition.
