Joining the cavalcade of floats and entertainers winding their way through the Hastings CBD in this Saturday's Blossom Parade will be 10 mini-floats with a difference.
The mini-floats showcase the creative talents of 11 local artists using the parade's theme of Spring - Back to the Future. The 3D works, each sitting on a 60cm by 1.2m purpose-built bike trailer, will be towed by vintage bicycles for the parade, before being taken to the Hastings City Art Gallery where they will form the Revolution exhibition, on display in the foyer until October 13.
Makiko Smith, Darryl Grant, Perry Davies, Asaki Kajima, Adrian Thornton, Emanuel Dunn, Jonathan Brown, Sally Maguire, Anna Maria Gori, Jil of Aotearoa and Griz Edmonds were invited into the show from a desire by parade organisers, Creative Hastings, and community arts adviser Pitsch Leiser to give the parade a bit more of a contemporary edge.
All the artists have approached the project from diverse angles and used a diverse range of materials, from metal to cherry blossom and an old bath tub.
