A 25-year-old Napier man allegedly tossed packages containing drugs and other contraband into Hawke's Bay Regional Prison's grounds yesterday.
A member of the public alerted police to a man running through a paddock north of the prison, near Mangaroa, about 5.30pm. A cordon was put in place and a man arrested.
Sergeant Eden Sewell said packages were recovered on the prison grounds containing an ounce of cannabis, tattooing needles and ink, a cellphone and charger and cigarettes.
The man was charged with possession of cannabis for supply and more charges were likely. He was due to appear in the Hastings District Court this morning.
