When part-time musician Patrick Le Geyt was asked to do a gig for his local marae, he knew neither he nor any of the other boys in the band would have any hesitation doing it - for free.
"That's what you do to tautoko the marae," he said as he and the rest of The Rude Boys packed up at the end of Saturday afternoon's Pukemokimoki Marae 10th anniversary gig in Napier.
He and almost all the band, including son Aaron, had grown up in the Maraenui area, where the marae opened in 2007, the realisation of a dream of half-a-century of urbanisation. His parents had been among those who saw the dream come and go.
"We all come from here, I had my wedding reception here," he said.
They're a group of guys who simply want to jam and reggae together, who played one of their first gigs across the other side of Maraenui Park.
