Staff and patients at Cranford Hospice were "humbled" by a visit from Her Excellency Lady Janine Mateparae.
Dressed elegantly and with a gentle demeanour she entered the Hospice yesterday to tour the ward where she spoke with three patients, general manager Helen Blaxland said.
"Everyone appreciated meeting Her Excellency - it adds to their wonderful stay at Cranford, one chap spoke about how a nurse was worried about him being at home, so the nurse bundled him up and brought him in it just shows that level of care goes beyond."
Following an official mihi whakatu (welcome), led by cultural advisor Francis Te Pou, Lady Janine was greeted by a room filled with volunteers and staff.
The youngest was Year 13 Havelock North High School student Kaitlyn Jackson - who spoke about lending a hand as part of her gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
