Police talk to one of the occupants of a car after a pursuit led a man to swim across the Ngaruroro River.

Police talk to one of the occupants of a car after a pursuit led a man to swim across the Ngaruroro River.

A 23-year-old fugitive who attempted to escape police by swimming across a Hawke's Bay river has been remanded in custody until July 22.

Abe McLean, aka Abe Makae-McLean and Abe Eparaima, is due to appear in Hastings District Court later this month after he allegedly failed to stop and rammed a police car on Saturday afternoon.

He then drove to the Ngaruroro River, near the Chesterhope Bridge, and dived into the chilly water to escape.

However, he was caught on the opposite river bank by waiting police.
