Traffic is being diverted on SH2 north of Waipawa this morning while emergency services attend an accident after a tanker truck containing possibly flammable materials collided with an empty vehicle on the side of the road.
A police spokesperson said initial information indicated the accident happened just before 10am, on Great North Rd just south of the intersection of Watts Rd.
The truck had gone off the road on the northbound lane and a power pole had been knocked over, but there were no injuries.
Centralines staff are on the scene now trying to restore power to some residential houses, and the road was blocked until the area was safe.
Traffic was being diverted onto Racecourse and Tamumu Roads, and it was uncertain how long diversions would remain in place.
