Police patrols then located the offender and the stolen Suzuki Swift a short distance from the centre of town, beginning a short high speed pursuit as the offender tried to flee.
Sergeant Guy Callahan said the chase was along Te Awa Ave, Napier, which runs adjacent to State Highway Two and is lined by residential properties.
"It all started and finished in just under two minutes, it took place along a fairly straight stretch of road."
Police were unsure what speeds the pursuit reached, but they were in excess of the 50kph and 70kph speed limits on the road.
Sergeant Callahan said the pursuit ended when the fleeing driver failed to make a left hand bend and crashed into a member of the public, driving a white station wagon, as he was leaving the entrance of the Maraenui Golf Club.
"The other driver suffered no injuries, the fleeing driver suffered minor leg injuries and was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital."
Napier Police arrested the male offender at the scene of the crash and later arrested a 38-year-old female in connection with the alleged stabbing and carjacking.
Mr Clere said police received a tip off from the public that led to the female offenders arrest.
"As a direct result of information received from eye witnesses to the original incident police located the 38-year-old female, in a vehicle in the inner city.
"She will face charges in relation to these incidents and is likely to appear in the Napier District Court tomorrow morning."
The 62-year-old victim was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
Mr Clere said he would like to acknowledge the excellent support that members of the public gave in both assisting the victim and in providing useful information which proved vital in making the two arrests.
