A man who allegedly caused a dramatic police pursuit through Havelock North early on Tuesday morning has been denied bail.

Havelock North was jolted awake just before 2am as the car police say Reihana Hohepa Kireka, 34, was driving was brought to a stop beside Anderson Park.

A police spokeswoman said police spotted a vehicle on Jellicoe St, Hastings at 1.54am which had incorrect number plates and had allegedly been stolen.

A brief pursuit began on Lipscombe Cres, spikes were deployed and then car's tyres burst.

She said the driver ran from the vehicle but was located by a police dog and arrested.

Witness James Wilkie-George said he first saw the vehicle, followed by a number of police cars coming down Karamu from the St Aubyn St intersection, on his way home.

He then saw them again down Sylvan Rd, before they turned on to Heretaunga St, all the way out to Havelock North.

"I could see two police vehicles trying to nudge the vehicle to a stop and could see a couple of its tyres blown and sparks flying everywhere, then a couple more police in pursuit not far behind them," Wilkie-George said.

He could hear the "grinding of the rims and sirens" all the way out towards Havelock North.

Kireka appeared at Hastings District Court on Tuesday on driving, violence charges and dishonesty matters, sporting a torn hoodie.

He was remanded in custody and will appear before the court on October 1.
