Creative Arts Napier known as CAN wants to let locals know they are here and its doors are open to everyone.

CAN is bursting with beautiful original art and artisan goodies as our Summer Market hits full swing.
This year we have 30 talented stallholders offering their wares in our Main Gallery, around half of which are new to CAN markets - and will hopefully return in the future.
The Summer Market, open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, provides an alternative to mass-produced products this giving season, with a wide variety of quality crafted and unique items.
Over the Garden Wall, an exhibition by Lou Mathieson, opens in our small gallery on Friday, December 13.
Lou Mathieson has been working with glass for 20-plus years after graduating with a BA in Applied Arts (glass major), followed by a Post Grad Secondary Teaching Dip.
She has been living and commuting between Auckland and Napier for many years, and by the end of this year, Napier will be her permanent home. She’s setting up a studio and a teaching outlet for glass casting in Hawke’s Bay.
She has taught casting to adults and children through community education for many years and her own practice. Lou loves the casting process, the beginning stage of carving the wax and defining what the end form will be in crystal glass.
Over the Garden Wall serves as an introduction to Lou’s new permanent life in Napier. The exhibition consists of crystal glass vessels and sculptures in various vibrant and pastel colours.
Inspired by her garden on the hill, Lou includes delicate motifs of flora and fauna, such as butterflies and flowers throughout.
In our Workshop Gallery, we will have a selection of photography works by youth around Hawke’s Bay. Since its inception in 2021, organisers of FOTOFEST - the annual photography festival for Hawke’s Bay held each September - have been committed to including a youth competition as part of the event to support young artists. This year more than 50 entries were received from local youth and will be exhibited at CAN as a collective exhibition from December 13.
Coming up in early January we have Coastal Creations by Steffi Tregenna, Views by Dave McGeorge, and Reclamation by Murray Woodmass. For more details on what’s coming up at CAN, head to our website www.thecan.co.nz.
With record visitor numbers, a diverse collection of exhibitions and workshops, a month-long celebration of pop art and much more, we have had a very successful year supporting our creative community.
CAN will be closed from December 25 opening again on January 3, 2025 to give our hard-working staff and volunteers a much-needed break.
We wish you all a wonderful and safe Christmas and holiday season and look forward to welcoming you all again in the New Year. Meri Kirihimete me te tau hou.
