The New Year race meeting at Woodville on Saturday was a winner for the club, with a record number of punters.

More than 2000 people packed the course for the Woodville/Pahiatua Racing Club's main event of the year, with families turning up to enjoy the free kids' entertainment, live music, the Great Kiwi Sausage Festival, as well as the action on the track. Event-goers baked in the 28C temperature as the gale force wind and rain of previous days took a day off.

"This is a fabulous crowd and the carparks are chokka," committee man John Shannon said.

"The young members of our committee have done a great job in revitalising this event."

Event manager Maggie Oulaghan said she was delighted so many families turned up to the Interislander Summer Festival.

"It's the perfect opportunity for people to catch up with friends and spend time with family in a relaxed atmosphere, where there's something for everyone to enjoy.

"We're thrilled a record number of people came out to enjoy a day of picnics, summer fun and the odd flutter on their favourite horse," she said.

The Potter family from Hawke's Bay were joined by friends from Dunedin and Wellington, for what has become a family day out at Woodville.

Family members agreed the atmosphere was great.

For Ralph and Linda Lilley and Annette Mai and Brian Dassler of Dannevirke the meeting is their annual big day out.

"This is our yearly get-together, and the atmosphere is great and the weather fabulous," Mrs Lilley said.

The atmosphere is also the drawcard every year for the Moses family of Kumeroa.

On Saturday they were joined by the George family from Taihape.

They agreed it was very impressive.

Racing club president Joe Dodunski was pleased and had special praise for those in charge of the track. "It's magnificent," he said.

Meanwhile, Nicola, wife of Tony Kaye, the trainer of Iamishwara, winner of the Bambry's Water Treadmill Woodville-Pahiatua Cup, was hoping the win would herald a good year for them.

"Tony is one of the hardest working trainers out there but, what with the fire at our stables in Palmerston North and everything, 2013 wasn't our year," she said.

Fire ravaged the couple's stables, killing two ponies and some sheep, while Tony Kaye suffered injuries to his arm.

"We just need more horses to train," she said.
