Against the wind . . . . The 100th regatta for NZ’s oldest yachting trophy, the Sanders Cup, at the Javelin National Championships off Kaiti Beach here this week, produced its first trophy winner on Thursday.
Phil McNeill from Kerikeri and Hamish Hey from Half Moon Bay won the first race
of the Sanders series, which earned them the Kingham Trophy. This was presented by Commander Yvonne Gray of HMNZS Manawanui on behalf of the navy.
Craig Gilbert and Rob Fordyce of Auckland finished second, ahead of Gisborne’s defending national Javelin titleholders Colin and Ross Shanks. After two days of racing, McNeil and Hey were making a bid for both trophies, leading the Sanders series on countback from David Brown and David Feek of Manawatu. Both crews had 11 points, while the Shanks, representing Gisborne Yacht Club, were two points further back in third place.
Racing continues today.
