Caleb Taewa was the best of them.
The Gisborne Boys' High School Blues and Royals all-rounder made the highest score, an unbeaten 28 as first-drop, in Game 1 of the T20 Challenge Cup on Wednesday.
The platform for GBHS six-wicket win lay on the dismissal of Campion College second 11
captain Taye McGuinness at the top of the order for 21, leg-before-wicket to left-arm bowler Charlie Whitfield 7.3 overs into the first innings.
McGuinness was timing and placing the ball skilfully; with player-umpires in operation on an artificial pitch and the batsman on the sweep, it was a brave decision. Blues and Royals skipper Jett Whitaker had earlier won the coin-toss on Nelson Park 2 and chosen to bowl; Whitfield took 2-13 in 2.4 overs. Campion first-drop Connor Starck made a noteworthy unbeaten 22 and was composed in the way in which he dealt with the ball around leg stump but with only six players, the College was all-out for 52 in 11.3 overs.
GBHS No.4 Sol Bevins was on 6 not-out when Taewa hit imposing seamer Jaco du Preez, in only his second match, behind square leg, for 4 to win the season opener three balls into the 10th over.
