“They were flying!!,” as one fan put it.
Rees said the track was in great shape, as it has been for the past few seasons, .
He was rapt to win his two titles.
“Everyone calls me the old bugger now, so getting the odd win feels real good.”
Peter Rees was followed by Regan Penn (235G) in the Champ of Champs and then by Asher Rees (1NZG).
In the Points Dash series, second place went to John Prentice (5G and 81G) and Ethan Rees (127G).
Asher Rees was outstanding on Saturday night with two fine wins in a display of speed and style.
“Isn’t it great to have Asher back in Gisborne,” his Dad said at the prizegiving afterwards.
The 60-strong field of youth ministockers put on a great show both nights, with plenty of contact and a couple of rollovers showing how hard they went.
Racing in that category was highlighted by the excellent driving of Vinzent MacGregor (5G).
He won the junior title comprehensively with what was seen as a calculated and even clinical display of patience and timing.
“Vinzent drove so well, doing exactly what he needed to do at the right time,” said his proud Dad Dylan.
“He’s a great emerging talent and we’re very proud of him.”
MacGregor teamed up with Koby Gooch (59G) to take out the Interclub Challenge for Gisborne, ahead of combinations from Palmerston North and Rotorua.
The support programmes both nights
really delivered too, marred to a degree by a nasty moment in the TQs when the rush after the start into the pit corner claimed another victim.
A visiting Hawke’s Bay driver lost it going into the corner in race one for the TQs on Friday night, with he and his machine somersaulting several times before landing hard on the track.
Fortunately he was OK.
The Gisborne TQ fraternity gathered around on Saturday to help him rebuild his car, and he was back out racing Saturday in a better set-up car with a smile back on his face.
Incidentally, Dylan MacGregor (17G) has bounced back strongly from his tumble on the track last month. On Friday night he lapped almost the whole field in one of his races.
The streetstockers chased each other around the track in fine style that was thoroughly entertaining. Likewise the production saloons.
On Saturday night the saloons all but stole the show, in the opinion of one speedway observer.
“Daniel Cook on board 77G produced one of the drives of the season for them in race one that night, in my opinion.
“He started on Grid 6 and muscled and powered his way through the whole field. It was great to watch.”
The whole class contributed to very impressive racing.
The fireworks show sponsored again by Trevor Jukes and Jukes Transport could be heard, and seen, from just about everywhere.
It was brilliant and seemed to go on forever.
Club president Sam Hughes reckoned they saw a great couple of nights racing.
“What an awesome way to finish our season, with awesome driving and fireworks.
“We got a big crowd Saturday night for this time of year, and we really appreciated the support.”
