Heat was the third party in every game played in Poverty Bay Bowling Club's open championship triples.

The championships were played over two days in sweltering conditions. The two-life format was used, with games of one hour 45 minutes or 12 ends.

Four teams competed in the men’s triples, and they needed six rounds to get a winning team.

In some games, one shot separated the teams

In the first round, Marc Alexander (skip), Dawson Owen (director) and Craig Smith (lead) defeated Dave Hooper (s), Ron Seabrook (2) and Bruce Gledhill (l) 10-9.

In Round 2, Hooper’s team defeated George Vaotuua (s), Steve Jenkins (d) and Les Whittington (l) 17-16.

Vaotuua’s team nearly caught Hooper’s on the last two ends.

In the fourth round in the provisional final, Hooper defeated John Andrews (s), Scott Amor (d) and Jack Clark (l) 11-10.

After 11 ends the game was drawn at 10-10 and Jack Clark had a bowl close to the jack, but Dave Hooper managed to get one closer to win the game.

This meant these two teams had to play each other again.

In the final, the team with younger players — Andrews, Amor and Clark — had a relatively easy win in hot conditions.

The winners of the women’s triples, in which five teams took part, were Kathryn Flaugere (s), Anna Colvin (d) Helen Hunt (l), who won every game.

They had a convincing win in the final against Jessie Davis-Law (s), Cheryl Jenkins (d) and Anita Vaotuua (l).

Games were not as close as those in the men’s competition.

After getting a great start, Lesley Seymour (s), Joy Davis (d) and Kathy Carroll (l) lost to Vaotuua’s team 11-8 in Round 1.

In Round 2, Seymour’s team defeated Jan Powell (s), Erin Sutherland (d) and Marilyn Knowles (l) 10-8.

Players did well to play in such heat. It was great to see many players in the new bright green club shirts.
