Nine players of the match-day 10 may bat or field at any time.
Leg-spinner Dylan Foster was Poverty Bay’s most successful bowler, taking 2-31 off eight overs.
Left-arm spinner Campbell Steele (2-37 off five) and seamers Te-Reimana Gray (1-15 off four), Peter Reynolds (1-30 off six) and Sam Briant (1-42 off eight) also took wickets.
Coastlands No.6 Billy Syme (64 runs from 53 balls, with 10 boundaries), wicketkeeper and first-drop Ben Parlane (29 off 34), Keaney (23 off 35, at No.4) and opener Te Manewha Rikihana (22 off 49) were all busy at the crease. The home team’s innings produced six partnerships of 20 runs or more.
For Poverty Bay, dismissed for 89 in 27.4 overs, No.5 Noah Torrance-Cribb played a good knock, hitting four boundaries in his 27 runs off 41 balls.
Coastlands left-arm speedster Morgan Wellsbury was outstanding, taking 3-9 off 4.4 overs, two of them maidens. Seamers Lucas Grant (3-20 off six overs) and Keaney (2-9 off four) also bowled well.
Nevertheless, Coastlands coach/manager Matt Adsett saw great potential in the Poverty Bay side.
He said Torrance-Cribb “batted smart”, putting away anything short or wide.
“Dylan (Foster) is a lovely flighter of the ball, and ’keeper Angus Baker didn’t just set a good tone in the field, his lateral movement is outstanding for a boy of that age.
“Sebastian Wilson was fabulous as skipper — a natural leader who projects enthusiasm.”
Poverty Bay will play the next three games in the Northern Districts tournament in Hamilton, from Monday to Wednesday next week. They will play Hamilton, Waikato Valley and a Hamilton invitation team.
