HSOB won the toss, decided to bowl first and had OBR in trouble at 30-5 off nine overs.
Tallott said a “magic” piece of fielding set the tone for the day. David Salmon pulled off a stop at gully and, from his knees, threw down the stumps at the bowler’s end, running out Craig Christophers for nought.
OBR stretched out the innings to the 28th over but captain Jonathan Purcell said the batting effort was never going to be enough to test HSOB. From there, they had to try to limit the damage.
OBR were also penalised five runs for dissent. Umpire Tony Lee said the penalty was imposed because of a batsman’s reaction to being given out leg before wicket.
Norris took 5-33 off 10 overs. Four batsmen fell lbw, three of them to Norris.
Ian Loffler top-scored for OBR with 19 off 57 balls and he had support from No.9 Matt Cook, who lasted 38 balls for 11.
Tallott said OBR’s meagre total was down to “average batting and decent bowling”.
“We bowled well and fielded well. We held our catches.”
Salmon scored 39, Robbie Tallott, 31 and Scott Tallott, 20.
Purcell said it was a tough day.
The pitch had “a bit of spice” but OBR didn’t start well enough. Catches also went down when OBR were in the field.
“We were happy with the bowling,” Purcell said.
Pirates picked up valuable points but Gisborne Boys’ High School didn’t make it easy for them.
Boys’ High batted the full 45 overs but lost two wickets at the end, allowing Pirates to get maximum bowling points.
The schoolboys’ 138 was overhauled by Pirates, who managed 175-6 off 35 overs.
For Boys’ High, the top four batsmen all made starts, with Jacob Colbert hitting 45 and Travis Mitchell, 19.
They were in a strong position at 67-2 but lost two wickets shortly afterwards and from there pushed on to a solid, if conservative, first innings total.
Tayla Hollis took 3-16 off seven overs for Pirates and Matt Crampton, 2-23 off 14.
Pirates skipper Dane Thompson said Boys’ High batted “very, very patiently”.
The ball came off the deck quite slowly and it sometimes jagged off the seam, so the batsmen had to apply themselves, he said.
“Tayla Hollis bowled really well . . . she was the pick of the bowlers.”
Brad Reynolds batted sensibly for Pirates, scoring 56, and Thompson hit 59.
Thompson took a while to find his groove but batting became easier the longer he was out there, he said.
Boys’ High captain Paul Stewart said he was pretty happy with his team’s batting.
Their bowling was “not the greatest” and the game might have been closer if they’d held a couple of catches.
