The cream eventually rose to the top but it took 18 holes or more to decide most Men’s Handicap Cup champions on Saturday.
Zane Boyle won the senior final in what was expected to be a blow-for-blow battle with Matt Henwood.
The 17th hole proved crucial. Boyle, who was 1-down, sank a 10-foot for a scrambling par then watched as his opponent three-putted from what Boyle estimated to be about 6-feet for bogey and the loss.
Boyle then parred the 18th to snatch victory.
The intermediate final also went 18 holes, with John Collier Jr defeating Chris Fox.
Matt Downie outgunned Steve Rolls 3 and 1 in the only final that did not reach the clubhouse/Rugby Park green.
The endeavour final required extra holes, Steve Johnson beating Lindsay Hunt on the 19th.
Teenager Marcus Gray has a career of achievements ahead of him.
Last Friday he added to what could become a lengthy list with consecutive eagles in a personal-best round at the Park.
The left-hander eagled the 455-metre par-5 eighth then followed up with another eagle-3 on the 436m ninth. He hit both greens for two and nearly made double-eagle or albatross on the ninth — putting his second to tap-in distance.
