Brave, keen or crazy.
Take your pick in describing the hardy souls who ventured out in the rain, wind and cold for the Johnston Cup Canadian foursomes net on Sunday.
Viv Kyle and Graham Shapland would probably prefer “brave” and their net 80 was rewarded with victory on the day.
Tegal Smith would probably go for “crazy” as he and Renee Hiko were second on 82, followed by Lee and Anthony Steel on 83 and Paipan Denigan and Rusty Smith on 84.
Two players fresh from success in the King of the Coast at Tolaga Bay have shifted their sights to club championship glory.
But both Jason Devery and Danny Boyle have hard rows to hoe to repeat their Sunday successes — Devery winning the second 16 and Boyle the third 16 of the KotC.
Boyle did not post a qualifying round for the intermediate men's championship so goes in as the 16th and bottom qualifier, and faces top seed Anthony Pahina in the first round.
Devery recently joined Park and qualified 10th in the 11-man senior men's field. Ahead of him waits a tough first-up prospect in Sel Peneha.
Defending champion Tony Akroyd qualified third while the man he beat in last year's final, Anaru Reedy, topped qualifying with a 1-under 71.
Akroyd, Reedy, Rod Moore, Pete Stewart and Daniel Collier all earned byes into round 2.
The intermediate men's division features a full 16 missing 2021 champion Tom Reynolds but featuring last year's junior champion Matt Henwood, who qualified fifth.
Pahina is at top seed, followed by Craig Christophers and Sefo Fonoti.
Ian Loffler top qualified in the junior division and faces life member Ray Grace in round 1.
The endeavour field features eight players — Carl Carmody junior the No.1 seed.
First-round matches must be played by August 14.
