Poverty Bay

GOUT in his foot kept Wynne MacLellan out of golf for over two months.

He’s back and on Sunday booked himself a place in the semifinals of the senior men’s club championships.

The 60-year-old, who qualified 13th for the champs in his return early August, defeated Alex Kirkpatrick 2 and 1 in the first round of matchplay on Sunday, then followed it up with par golf in crushing Stefan Andreassen 7 and 6 on Sunday.

It booked him a last-four meeting with No.1 seed Andrew Higham.

Higham finished 21 shots ahead of Pat Butler in strokeplay qualifying but was taken all the way and then some by the bottom seed before getting across the line on the 20th.

There was no such fright the next day for Higham as he eliminated Simon Jeune 4 and 3.

Peter Kerekere last week posted a video on Facebook of Tini Hawea standing in the lake to play his shot on the third hole (he made par).

Days later Hawea starred again as he defeated defending senior men’s champion Kerekere 2 and 1 to move into the semifinals.

The teenager next plays Pete Anderson, who fended off tenacious veteran Tene Goldsmith 2-up on Saturday then defeated William Brown 4 and 3 on Sunday.

Brian Morrissey is halfway to retaining the intermediate crown. The 74-year-old beat Steve Palmer and Mark Norman to set up a semifinal against Vance Richardson, who knocked out Brad Morgan and Duncan Bush.

In the other semi, Neil Mackie, who disposed of Andy Abrahams and top qualifier Deevon Gray, faces Daryl Grant, who defeated Richard Foon and Cliff Poole.

Murray Smith was the only junior player to have two matches over the weekend. He won both — against Alan Destry then top seed Don Wright — and will play Roy Skuse in the semis.

Walter Mackey and Syd Liley are in the other semi.

The endeavour semis pit Noel Absalom against John Rouse and Warwick Thompson against Robin Foster.

SHE has multiple club championship titles to her name but Anne Witters will probably need one of the performances of her golfing life to stay in the hunt for another senior honour.

Witters is next on the hit list of defending women’s champion and white-hot favourite Tessa McDonald.

The first two rounds of matchplay in the 2017 champs were held this week and, as expected, Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay representative McDonald comfortably beat Gay Young to move into next week’s semifinals.

There the 2-handicapper faces 15-handicapper Witters, who beat Marg Colebourne, while the other semi pits Skylah Pohatu against Miggles Shanks.

Viv Bell’s defence of the intermediate title ended yesterday. She fell to top qualifier Sally Spence, who next faces Janet Steele.

Kath Willis, who had two twos yesterday, plays Mary Allan in the other intermediate semi.

Defending champion Leigh Fletcher remains alive in the junior championship. She beat Annabelle Sutton yesterday to set up a semifinal clash with Letty Poananga.

Odette Thompson, whose husband Warwick is in the semis of the endeavour men’s club champs, faces Di Webb in the other junior semi.

Semis are on Tuesday and finals are on Wednesday.

Gisborne Park

Jean Foot is the intermediate women’s club champion for the second time.

Foot defeated Sue Maisey in the 36-hole matchplay final yesterday to add it to her 2011 title.

She led 4-up after 18 holes and went on to win 3 and 2.

Defending champion Francie Hutton and Mahi Marino are to decide the junior women’s title on Saturday while the senior women’s final between Karen Hay and Jo Kerr is scheduled for Sunday, but may be played at a later date due to a bereavement.

It could be one of the shots of Mark Kennedy’s golfing career.

Kennedy advanced to the final of the intermediate men’s club championships, courtesy of an eagle-2, which ended his semifinal against Tom Reynolds on Sunday.

Kennedy was 4-up with four holes to play only for Reynolds to win the 15th and 16th.

With the pressure mounting on the 17th, Kennedy sank a 4-iron for two, which Reynolds watched all the way into the hole, then applauded.

Lying in wait for Kennedy in Sunday’s final is top seed Anthony Pahina who made no contest of his semi against Quentin Peneha. The pair shook hands on the 12th.

Jayden Bright has his sights on another senior men’s title after winning through to the final.

The 2012 champion defeated Brad Reynolds 2 and 1 and will face either Rob Taylor or Bo Huhu.

Reynolds fought back from 3-down to square the match on the 15th but Bright won the 16th and 17th to end it.

Twelve-year-old Zach Rolls is a win away from a club championship crown after beating Mason Emery in the junior semis.

The Gisborne Intermediate student set up victory with a front nine holes of 44 in his 4 and 3 win.

Pete Tamatea and Tony Leggett are to play their junior semi tomorrow.

Mike Hutton and Wayne McHugh are the endeavour finalists.

TONY Green hit form a week too late on Sunday.

Green’s 81-16-65, for 41 points, won the 0-16 division of the men’s stableford.

He was two points clear of Brian Wallace, who only a week prior knocked him out of the intermediate men’s club championships after being 8-up after nine holes.

Dave Quinn (40pts) won the 17+ division on Sunday while Helen Humble (38) won the women’s competition.

Pauline Summersby (34pts) won the women’s stableford and beat Iritana Ngarimu in a women’s Handicap Cup match.

JOHN Hale avenged his 2013 defeat to claim his first club championship title on Sunday.

Hale beat Mike Brooker 2 and 1, reversing the result of their 2013 final.

Mickey Grant is back on the intermediate throne. The 2013 champion beat Walter Robinson 5 and 4.

The 2017 Sean Shivnan Pharmacy Poverty Bay veteran men’s and women’s open tournament is at Poverty Bay Golf Club from Sunday, November 5, to Wednesday, Novmeber 8.

Format for men is strokeplay for Endeavour Cup (55 to 69yrs) and Discovery Cup (70yrs-plus) on Sunday, followed by handicap matchplay in groups of eight from Monday to Wednesday.
