Te Puia Hot Springs

It was the hole-in-one that wasn’t.

James Forrester sank his tee shot on the 140-metre 16th hole on Sunday . . . for a three.

Forrester sent his first tee shot well left into golfing oblivion so hit another ball, this time straight at the flag.

The bottom of the flag can’t be seen from the tee and a playing partner jokingly said: “Nice par, James.”

Prophetic words.

Forrester went on to birdie the next hole and shoot 80-15-65, for 37 points, to win the men’s stableford.

The men’s club championships continued with Bill Clark defeating Nehe Dewes on the 20th in an intermediate match.

Patutahi member Jace Brown’s city course visit as part of the Tairāwhiti squad preparing for next week’s Freyberg Masters interprovincial at the Awapuni Links reaped red-figure reward on Saturday.

His 42 points also won him the division 1 men’s stableford.

Bill Simpson warmed up for this Saturday’s Primo Cup final with 89-22-67, for 41 points, to win division 2.

Electrinet Park

Jason Devery and his crew did what the All Blacks could not on Sunday . . . raise a trophy.

Devery, Mat Downie, Bailey Matoe and Tai Aramakutu won the Greentree Shield mixed teams’ aggregate stableford after the ABs’ fell to the Springboks.

Ian Loffler was in double silverware-winning form on Saturday. His 79-7-72 was good enough to win the vice-president’s (gross) and secretary’s (net) trophies.

Dave Harrison and Kino White have set themselves up nicely to qualify for the 9-hole twilight shootout final at the end of summer next year. After four stableford rounds, both are on 74 points although there is a long way to go.

Players count their best five nets before Christmas and best five nets after. The top 10 qualify for the final which will see the winner go home with a wad of cash.

The Park’s new simulator is proving popular and has been put to enjoyable competitive effect in the weekly twilight.

A simulator closest to the pin contest is running over the duration of the summer twilight, with each weekly winner qualifying for the $500 grand final.
