GBHS keeper Josh Davies proved the hero. Having saved a penalty stroke during normal time, he kept three of the Whakatane players scoreless as GBHS won the shootout 3-2.
GBHS were outgunned 4-1 by eventual tournament winners Hastings in the semifinals although were the first team to score against them up to that point.
A two-minute lapse in which their opponents scored twice was the difference in a 3-1 bronze medal playoff loss to Scots College.
Gisborne Girls’ High had several close matches over the duration of their tournament.
They finished second in their three-team pool, then pipped Nayland College 2-1 in the quarterfinals before going down narrowly, 2-1, to Marlborough Girls’ College in the semis and losing 4-1 to Pukekohe High in the bronze medal game.
Campion College were 10th at the North Island Mixed tournament held in Taupō.
