WaikohuTop honours were shared around the clubs at the Waikohu Ladies Open on Saturday.

The six winners came from six different clubs.

Wairoa’s Fairlane Wesche (83) won the 0-18 gross, Gisborne Park’s Carney Pipi (73) the net and Poverty Bay’s Viv Bell (33) the stableford.

Mahia’s Maraea Wesche (95) won the 19+ gross, Waikohu’s Audrey Tamanui-Nunn (68) the net and Te Puia Springs’ Hiria McClutchie (34) the stableford.

Round 2 of the Poverty Bay women’s pennants was held in conjunction with the open.

Gisborne ParkJACK Glassford denied Rob Taylor a weekend double in the men’s stableford on Sunday.

Playing off the white tees, Glassford’s 81-13-68, for 40 points, pipped Taylor’s 76-7-69 by one point.

Taylor won on Saturday with 77-8-69, for 39, off the championship blue tees.

Mihi Marino and Pat Johansen combined to win the Nancy McCormick women’s 36-hole foursomes with 147 (72, 75).

Poverty BayVANCE Richardson’s got game.

Plenty of his playing partners will back up that claim, including his Saturday group as he strode to the No.1 qualifying spot for the Reynolds Cup men’s matchplay.

Richardson had 10 pars in the first 11 holes, a birdie on the 12th and a trio of bogeys around the Bay’s “Triangle” holes in his 3-over 75-9-66.

More impressively, he did it off the championship blue tees.

Richardson’s performance also won him the division 1 men’s net while Roy Skuse (70) won division 2.

Brad Morgan (net 69) and Rob Fletcher (68) won the Sunday divisions while the round of the day was arguably Peter Kerekere’s 3-under 69, including five birdies.

Glenn Morley had a front nine of 1-under 35 in his Thursday division 1 stableford-winning 75-6-69, for 39 points.

Sam Willock (39) won division 2.

PatutahiCHRIS Parker put together his best round in over a year in winning the senior men’s net on Sunday.

Parker had two birdies in a front nine holes of 36 as he carded 77-15-62, two strokes ahead of Tony Cave’s 79-15-64.

Cecil Brown won the junior division with 85-21-64.

Jenny Ruru’s 103-36-67 topped the women’s division.

MahiaCOLLEEN Wesche and Pete Bremner topped the points as good numbers turned up for club golf on Sunday.

Wesche won the women’s Iseki stableford with 101-32-69, for 41 points, although it took a countback from Elaine Westwood, who shot 91-22-69.

Bremner has had only a couple of rounds this year but both have been outstanding.

Heading towards the opening round of the Endeavour interclub pennants on April 6 at Mahia, Bremner won the men’s stableford with even-par 72-4-68s.

His uncle, Roger Bremner, was runner-up with 87-15-72

Te Puia SpringsBILL Clark had his second eagle on a par-4 in the space of a month on Sunday.

Clark made eagle-2 on the par-4 second hole in his stableford-winning 73-15-58, for 44 points — six points clear of the also-rans.

The club’s open opening day , postponed from the weekend because of a bereavement, will not be held this Sunday either. A date for it is to be confirmed.

Tolaga BayTOLAGA Bay’s first committee meeting for the year is on Sunday at 10am.

VeteransTHE Shark Trophy remains in Bay of Plenty hands after an enjoyable two rounds of the veteran challenge hosted by the Whakatane and Te Teko clubs this week.

BoP finished with a stableford average of 31.61 points to Gisborne East Coast’s 30.99 for the two rounds.

The Whakatane round on Monday attracted 88 veterans, including 22 representing GEC and eight women vets.

Poverty Bay member Noel Abaalom was the stand-out for the visitors, posting 91-25, 66, for 40 points, to be second individual overall.

Margaret Williams (PB) had 37 and another PB member, Ray Veall, had 36.

Among those to get twos was Te Puia Springs’ Peter Harrison, whose tee shot on the par-3 16th hole hit the pin, leaving him a virtual tap-in for birdie.

Shirley Paku capped a good day by winning the raffle — a large basket of groceries.

Incredibly, BoP and GEC finished with the same stableford average — 32.23.

A 58-strong field competed in round 2 at Te Teko on Tuesday — 19 representing GEC.

Paul Gretton (PB) was GEC’s best on the interesting par-70 track. He shot 89-17-72, for 35 points, one ahead of Glenn Burnside (PB) and Harrison,

Burnside also went close to an ace but settled for a two.

BoP again won the team average, with 30.99 to GEC’s 29.75

GEC will look to regain ownership of the silverware at Gisborne Park and Poverty Bay next year.

Women’s pennantsWAIKOHU made the most of their home advantage to dominate round 2 of the Northern Zone women’s pennants on Saturday.

The pennants was played in conjunction with the Waikohu Ladies Open and the hosts surged to a comfortable win in the stableford format.

Audrey Tamanui-Nunn led the way with 40 points — the best score of the day — while Marg Tuapawa had 36, Valerie Grace 33 and Ella Wynyard 32.

Waikohu amassed 141 points, 13 clear of Mahia (128), with Wairoa third on 125.

Poverty Bay were fourth on 123, followed by Tolaga Bay/Tahunga 121, Patutahi 114, Gisborne Park 111 and a three-woman Te Puia Springs 79.

The best individuals from the clubs other than Waikohu were Maraea Wesche (36 points, Mahia), Carney Pipi (36, Park), Sylvia McRoberts (35, Wairoa), Rochelle Taewa (34, Poverty Bay), Hiria McClutchie (34, Te Puia), Jenny Ruru (32, Tolaga/Tahunga) and Shelley Robertson (32, Patutahi).

Mahia’s second placing, to go along with their victory in round 1, kept them top overall on 15 points. Wairoa are second on 12.5, half a point ahead of Waikohu.
