The Challenge Cup kicks Poverty Bay Cricket off this afternoon at Nelson Park.
Poverty Bay Cricket's first competition game of the season will pit the Gisborne Boys' High School Blues and Royals against the Campion College second 11 in a 20-over match on ground 1, an artificial pitch, from 3.30pm.
In the absence of a Tairāwhiti Women's Cricket Club side or Lytton High School side, the three-team Challenge Cup will see Campion take the GBHS Life Guards on next Wednesday with the Boys' High derby on November 8.
The Blues and Royals under GBHS second 11 captain Jett Whitaker have variety in their bowling attack: tall Brandon Fearnley can swing the ball away from right-handed batsmen and Ted Gillies has flighted his off-spin skilfully in the last two years.
Campion have in their ranks a capable all-rounder with first-grade experience in Taye McGuinness plus players new to the summer game.
