After the cancellation of the annual tournament because of Covid-19, Badminton Eastland has 51 players entered for its junior badminton tournament to be run at the Badminton Centre this weekend.
Play will begin at 1pm tomorrow and continue from 9.30am on Sunday. Singles and doubles in under-13, u15 and u19
age groups will be played.
Participation in badminton in the area has increased through the efforts of schools and the BWF Shuttletime programme introducing children to badminton.
Primary interschool, a one-day event at Kawakawa and Year 7 and 8 interschool competitions held this year were successful, with a fabulous competitive atmosphere and players having fun. The association junior clubs, Kiwibadminton and Hot Shots, have increased membership this year and volunteers are thanked.
Secondary schools are developing badminton programmes and the standard of badminton has improved. Tolaga Bay Area School, Waikirikiri School and Gisborne Intermediate have players in the AIMS Games in Tauranga in September.
