I was very disappointed to see on the news last Sunday all the logs coming down on to the road by the Motu River on the East Coast. Not only was it proof that no regulations have yet been put in place, but it was really dangerous. If those fishermen who were blocked passing at the time had been travelling just a little earlier, they could have easily been killed.
This proves nothing has yet been done and that if we had another storm on the East Coast, or in the Gisborne area or the Wairoa area, houses up our coast, in Gisborne or bridges anywhere on the East Coast would again be in danger of being destroyed or washed away.
This could happen in most of New Zealand.
This is not good enough and the councils and/or the Government should have passed legislation to stop slash and logs from being stored in vulnerable places where it can be washed down rivers and across roads causing havoc. This is yet another big wake-up call.
