A woman was taken to Gisborne Hospital in critical condition this morning after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Roebuck Road and Aberdeen Road.

The crash happened at around 8.35am.

Police said a 25-year-old woman in one of the vehicles was status 1 when taken to hospital.

“She was critically injured, with a significant head injury,” police said.

It took around 90 minutes to clear the crash scene.

The city end of Aberdeen Road was closed to traffic at the Disraeli Street corner while that happened.

Police have started a serious crash inquiry.

At the time The Herald went to print there was no update available on the injured woman's condition.

Sergeant Stu Rota said police were grateful for the phenomenal support from the Gisborne community following the crash.

“When police attended the scene members of the public travelling in the area stopped to come to the aid of police and the victims of the crash while an ambulance was on the way.

“The locals were fantastic and really helped out people who needed them this morning,” Sgt Rota said.

“People gave up clothing, provided blankets and first aid, and directed traffic.

“I could not be prouder of the community spirit in Gisborne after the genuine display of altruism I witnessed today.”
