MetService has confirmed the weather over Christmas will be a mixed bag.

Tomorrow a trough in the Tasman Sea is expected to spread some rain or showers onto the north and west of both the North and South Islands, with rain or showers to many parts of the country on Sunday, and possible thunderstorms over the North Island.

For Christmas Day the latest MetService  forecast is for an unsettled northwest to westerly flow over New Zealand, with rain or showers expected in many areas, especially northern and western parts of both the North and South Island. Thunderstorms are also possible in both islands.

Strong north-westerlies are likely around central New Zealand — the Cook Strait area.

MetService says unsettled conditions are likely to continue on Boxing Day with rain or showers in many areas. Thunderstorms are again possible in both islands. —  RH
