SH2 remained open to other traffic while the injured were cared for and the crash scene cleared.
In another crash yesterday, a woman was checked over at the scene by emergency services after the vehicle she was driving left State Highway 35 and rolled on to its side and into a ditch.
It happened at around 8.15am near the Christopher Road intersection.
The Herald understands the woman was on her way to Gisborne to take her dog to the vet when she crashed.
“A passerby broke the windscreen on the woman’s vehicle to get her and her pet out,” a witness said.
“The lady was shaken up by what occurred but otherwise unhurt.”
Police and firefighters from Tolaga Bay responded, along with St John from Gisborne and the Trust Tairāwhiti Rescue Helicopter.
