A truck driver suffered moderate injuries yesterday when his vehicle flipped over on State Highway 2 north of Te Karaka, spilling the load of silt it was carrying all over the highway.

Emergency services were alerted at around 12.35pm. The crash happened just past the Holdsworth property.

“The 38-year-old male driver had a moderate head laceration and was transported by St John Ambulance to Gisborne Hospital,” an emergency services spokesman said.

“The truck tipped on to its side and completely blocked both lanes of the highway,” he said.

The road was closed for a couple of hours while the crash scene was cleared.

Te Karaka’s volunteer fire brigade attended, along with a Gisborne fire crew, but the city crew were recalled when it became clear they were not required.

A recovery vehicle from Gisborne Hiabs went to the scene to recover the damaged truck.
