TRIALS are expected to soon get under way around land-based irrigation and storage of Wairoa's wastewater.
Last year, the Wairoa District Council was granted a town wastewater discharge resource consent by the Hawke's Bay Regional Council. The consent includes revised conditions incorporates milestones for land irrigation and storage with a
requirement that land-based irrigation is expected to be taking place across 50 hectares of land within the next five years.
An application for a consent for the first stage of land-based irrigation has now been lodged with the Hawke's Bay Regional Council.
Wairoa District Council chief executive Kitea Tipuna said the council has been working through the design phase of treated wastewater disposal to land, and the trial, involving land next to the wastewater plant, will help inform the direction of a more permanent solution.
“Improving the water quality of the Wairoa River is a goal of Council and the community and land-based irrigation is identified as the best way to achieve that,” Mr Tipuna said.
