A YOUNG child drowned in a backyard swimming pool at a house in Gisborne on Wednesday afternoon and emergency services have extended their sympathies to the family in the wake of the tragedy.
Police and St John ambulance staff were called to the Collins Street house at about 4pm.
“A
16-month-old boy had been found in the pool by family members and was unresponsive,” a police spokesman said.
“St John officers carried out resuscitation but, tragically, the child could not be revived. We offer our condolences to the family involved.”
Victim Support have been assisting the toddler’s grief-stricken family.
