MEET TINKERBELL: Gisborne SPCA has a new resident in Tinkerbell, a nearly two-year-old kunekune pig that thinks she is a dog. She is up for adoption as a pet to a good home. Picture by Rebecca Grunwell

A pig that thinks it is a dog will not end up on a dinner plate.

The kunekune-cross pig, nearly two years old, is up for adoption from Gisborne SPCA.

SPCA centre manager Lindy Magee said unfortunately the pig grew too big for her previous owner’s home.

“She was hand-raised from five weeks old as an inside piglet and comes running when called.

“Tinkerbell is toilet trained and even learned to ring a bell when she needed to go outside to use the bathroom.

“We have had her for less than two weeks and the previous owner comes to visit her.

“They have made it very clear that she is to remain a pet. They require an update on her every six months and she must not end up on a dinner table,” she said

Ms Magee said a suitable home would include space and, ideally, another pig.

“As long as she is given enough food, she doesn’t root up the soil.

“Tinkerbell is very trainable, sociable, sensitive and is good with kids and other animals,” she said.

For more information on adopting Tinkerbell visit the SPCA between 10-2.30pm Monday-Saturday or call them on 06-867 9463.
