Jessie Gibbs from Wellington’s  Narukami Taiko conducted two workshops in Gisborne on Saturday, spreading the word about the Japanese art of taiko drumming. Gisborne District Sister Cities, with local funding support and the assistance of Gisborne’s Sister Port, Gamagori in Japan, acquired a set of taiko some years ago.

Sister Cities vice-president Judy Livingston said when Ms Gibbs was in Gisborne last October for the Japan Day event she did a full inspection of Gisborne’s taiko drums. It was a quality set of drums, Ms Gibbs said, and she was willing to assist in establishing a taiko group here.

At the workshop on Saturday were, from left, Manawa Harrison, Ngaire Kimberley, Karin Mackill and Victoria Ladd.
