Congratulations Tairāwhiti Alzheimers on your 50th birthday. Those before you and those now have given so much to many of our most vulnerable people in our society.
It is frightening to see the growth in this very sad disease and to know it is not just the elderly — now, like many conditions, it is affecting younger folk. Although it is awful to think about such a future for a number of us, at the moment we have in our community a caring band of loving people who are doing their utmost to put more quality in the lives of not only those affected, but their carers as well.
Let us hope the next government, whoever it may be, recognises the need for more assistance to places like The Sherwood Club to give support to both people affected and their often tired-out carers.
Thank you also to the resthomes and dementia units in our community that are making a home for our loved ones. These dedicated institutions are also facing problems with space.
To look in the eyes of those we love, who are slowly losing today, tomorrow and lastly yesterday, is a reminder how much we owe them as family and community.
