PRICES eased considerably on the previous week with the store lamb section in the Matawhero sheep sale yesterday where 3100 head were presented for sale.

The sale attracted a small bench of local buyers.

“The best of the male store lambs from Amua Station at Te Karaka went for $95.50,” said sales commentator Peter McGrannachan from PGG Wrightson.

“Other good male lambs sold for $80-$85, medium types $70-$75 and lesser sorts for $50. There was a very good line of ewe lambs and the best of them, a line of shorn lambs from Puhoro Station Ltd of Wairoa, fetched $88.”

The medium ewe lambs made $60-$65 and the lighter types sold down to the $35-$40 mark. Mr McGrannachan said one pen of store two-tooth, woolly ewes, scanned dry, made $62.

The other mixed age store ewes realised $45-$55.

“I think the prospect of more cold weather coming upon us may have caused the slowdown in the store sheep market. It was obvious from the caution buyers showed yesterday.”

A small number of prime ewes realised $60-$68.

“Prime lambs sold from $92-$105. They were very good lambs. The prime prices were on par with previous weeks,” Mr McGrannachan said.

A pen of two-tooth cryptos made $40.
