Re: Responsible for clean-up, July 27 comment.
I have no issue with the placement of the Hawaiki Turanga sculpture and I agree with Murray Palmer on one thing, but one thing only; it certainly is “time for action” on the fiasco. However, I cannot agree with his argument and proposition
for remediation of the Waikanae location.
The progress of this project, since its inception in 2011, was halted two years ago when contamination was unearthed during excavation for the foundations. But installation of the mounting pads was completed — so there is no reason for further exposure of anything buried on that site.
Whatever is there has been there for decades and I see no evidence of any past or future risk to human health, so long as the ground remains undisturbed.
If the sensitivities of TROTAK and RIT simply stem from the perceived offence to Papatuanuku, then I feel that it is they who should bear the cost if they insist on having the site “sanctified”.
