Gisborne district councillors have agreed to contribute just over $14,000 to support sister city representatives invited to attend Tuia ki Turanga 250 commemorations in October.

Mayor Meng Foon said the Sister Cities committee had been generous in funding food and accommodation for visitors to Gisborne.

”Everything is paid for.”

Council will fund $14,660 in addition to $20,000 from Gisborne District Sister Cities Committee to pay for accommodation, catering and transport costs.

The agenda said a French Polynesian delegation of 130 people would include 30 dancers and musicians, 30 traditional singers, 30 from the cultural association and 40 government officials.

The delegation has also been invited because of the link with Tupaia, who landed here with Captain James Cook in 1769.
