Several pigs in the process of being singed sparked an unusual callout for Gisborne firefighters early yesterday morning when they and police responded to an incident in Endcliffe Road in Kaiti.

Calls about it came in at around 5am.

“On arrival we found a man was in the process of singeing the hair of four pigs, using a fire in a 44-gallon drum he had set up in the roadway gutter,” a senior firefighter said.

“Police who attended with us had a talk to him about it, and the officers asked us to put the fire out.”

“That sort of activity is not allowed in the roadway,” he said.
