Grape pruners from across Tairāwhiti competed in the annual Silver Secateurs grape pruning competition on Monday at the Ashwood Estate vineyard at Makaraka, pruning, stripping, wrapping and then tying their vines. About 50 pruners from 12 vineyards took part in the competition which was organised by LeaderBrand’s viticulture manager Kyle Mason.

The region’s best grape vine pruners were put through their paces in the annual Gisborne Silver Secateurs Awards at the Ashwood Estate property at the Makaraka racecourse on Monday.
It was rescheduled to that day because of the heavy rain on Friday.
Around 50 pruners from a dozen vineyards in
the region took part in a competition organised by LeaderBrand’s viticulture manager Kyle Mason.
The judges looked for quality of work, cane selection and speed, using the Sauvignon Blanc vines at Ashwood Estate.
Results from the competition will be published when they become available.
