Tairāwhiti Civil Defence is encouraging the community to register for the annual ShakeOut earthquake and tsunami preparedness exercise on October 19.

“Register now,” is the call from Civil Defence Emergency Management.

New Zealand ShakeOut is the country’s national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi.

It takes place across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake — drop, cover and hold. It is also a chance to practise a tsunami hīkoi (evacuation walk) for those in coastal areas.
