Due to wet weather expected next week, planned asphalting work on State Highway 2 will start on the evening of Wednesday, June 21, or the next fine night.
The area between Matawai township and Waioeka Gorge will be under a full road closure, with no detour available.
“The wider asphalting programme includes a number of worksites along the SH2 route between Gisborne and Waioeka Gorge,” a Waka Kotahi statement said.
“The crew will only work on one worksite at a time on the state highway, meaning either side of the closure points is open and operating as usual.
“This work will improve the highway after it suffered extensive damage during Cyclone Gabrielle, then supported increased traffic volumes due to the closure of SH2 between Wairoa and Napier.”
