Seven groups will compete in the Central district round of the national secondary schools’ chamber music contest, at the Lawson Field Theatre tonight.

Since its inception in 1965, the annual NZCT chamber music contest has provided a platform for thousands of students to perform with many participants having gone on to have successful musical careers both nationally and abroad.

“Our plan for the evening is that our seven groups will play their items of everything from Handel to waiata, on instruments ranging from piano and orchestral instruments to maracas and cajon,”  said district coordinator Anna-Marie Fenn.

“While the adjudicator deliberates, the Gisborne Combined Secondary Schools Orchestra will present a short bracket of the pieces they are working on.”

The winners of tonight’s contest will go on to compete in regional finals on June 24. The national final is on August 5, in Christchurch.

The visiting adjudicator for tonight’s competition is Sarah Spence, a music educator and professional cellist.

“Entry is free/koha and we look forward to seeing you there,” said Anna-Marie.
